Having 4-6 SEC teams in the playoff would be a wet dream for ESPN. Every 3-loss school in their conference would complain that they didn't get in over a 1-2 loss school in another Power 5.

In regards to alumni travel, i envision how I would attempt to travel if Arizona made a miracle run one day. Paying for flight/hotel/tickets for me and my family to Vegas for the PAC-12 championship, the CFP semifinal in Pasadena and a National Championship in Arlington would be out of the question. Realistically, we would pick 1-2 sites...and there are plenty of fans that couldn't even afford one of those.

Throw in 2 more playoff rounds and there's no way a fan base outside of Ohio State, Texas, etc. could afford to travel. Even the major programs would start to fade if they made it on an annual basis (like the recent empty stadium in Santa Clara).

8 teams isn't unreasonable, but I couldn't picture the NCAA going beyond that, unless games were hosted at home (like the FCS playoff format).
