Lack of talent, not Miller

Here is my personal take on the regression the last few years and it's simply the lack of talent on the roster the last few years compared to the 2010/11 team, 2013/14 and 2014/15 teams. I understand to a degree the bashing of Miller for the style of play and having too much control of his players but the talent is lacking overall compared to those former years mentioned. There is no way a Dylan Smith and or a Chase Jeter starts on those teams nor would they come off the bench either. Those teams had talent at every position and depth too. Outside of Mannion there isn't one player as good or better at any other position than what we have had the last few years. As good as josh green is nobody on this board would consider him better than Aaron Gordon, Stanley or Rondae. This team doesn't have a Kyle Fogg, Nick Johnson, Gabe York, Solomon Hill, DWill, etc. Grad transfers have been awful the last 2 years, Stone is basically Ryan Luther except he doesn't shoot it as much, Jordan Brown will be Jeter 2.0, and Akinjo will be a lesser version of Mark Lyons. Hazard and Baker aren't as good as what Kyle Fogg and Gabe York were. This years team is really lacking a shooting guard and a center bad and if Brandon Willams had been healthy the outlook would be much different since the backcourt would be set and we are seeing how bad this team misses Doutrive now since he would have planted Smith on the bench for a majority of the games. Those teams played better defense and didn't foul as much as this years team and were so much tougher and rebounded and that style worked then and no it didn't lead to a final 4 but it lead to 3 elite 8's and 2 of those we were one made shot away from a final 4 and the other took an insane shooting performance from Sam Decker (I was at that elite 8) to beat us. Does anyone really think that the combination of smith and jeter plus the bench is anywhere close to the shooting guards and centers and bench from 2010/11, 2013/14 and 2014/15? Yes miller needs to play to his team's strengths but it's not his fault for the loss of Williams and Terry Armstrong which I believe if they played this year we would be undefeated currently and ranked number 1

I'm not reading your essay but this is a terrible argument. This team has 2 top 10 picks, another borderline 1st rounder. A McDonald's all American, a guy who carried a mid major to a March madness win, and 4 - 5th year seniors that get big minutes.

There's probably 5 other teams in the nation that can put together a resume like that. Miller has recruited top talent like crazy, it's never been the issue, his coaching has. If you disagree please go back and look at the 2017-18 team as another recent prime example of this

This team has one top 10 pick, Green and Zeke won't even be lottery picks. Hazard is not even a factor on this years team so whatever he did in one tourney game is completely irrelevant now. The supporting cast sucks! Plain and simple. Smith, Jeter, Gettings, Hazard, Baker, Lee  aren't even close to the Parroms, MoMo's, Fogg's, York's and all the other talent since 2010. Who is the 3 point specialist on this years team? What about the lock down defender? Who is gonna get you 25 plus points from the guard spot? I would love to see Mannion take over more  scoring wise but we
Have seen when he shoots a high volume he's been way off. The freshman are talented but they aren't as talented as those Brandon Ashley, Stanley Johnson, RHJ teams or the Nick Johnson, TJ and Aaron Gordon teams. Dylan Smith wouldn't even get 4 min a game on those teams. Jeter wouldn't even get mop up minutes and Hazard? Please York would be higher up on the depth chart. Those teams didn't need TJ scoring but this years team needs Nico to score a lot

2017-2018 didn't have a point guard so that's why the early exit there. We have the PG now but there isn't a Trier, Alkins or Ayton. This years teams lacks a shooting guard and a center and someone that can consistently hit a 3

This is college, not the NBA. Not everyone has a bunch of first round draft picks. You have to develop talent and coach them up, and do it in a limited amount of time. Point is, we have way more talent than most. Oregon St doesn't have a NBA player on its roster and the my whooped up. St. John's too. Hell baylor maybe has 1 or 2.

I'd take experienced Tinkle and Thompson over our 1 year freshman all day.

Sure but I don't think anyone would say either of those guys is more talented than Nico or green, which was the original point

Agree, but what good is talent (with high ceilings) if they never stay to make an impact.

This team is young and relies on 3 freshmen to carry them - we simply are not a deep team. In my opinion, the issue is actually with our defense and our ability to run a set play in the half court offense. When we played OSU our defense looked extremely unorganized and we were constantly scrambling resulting in an OSU 3 or a dunk/layup. Its Millers responsibility to ensure the players know their defensive responsibility and when/how to help. Offensively, if the shots don't fall that's a bummer but our half court offense looks non existent. Does Miller even draw up plays? Our plan seems to be throw it to Zeke, or play hero ball and attempt a low % shot.

These next few months are a huge test for the players and Miller. I'd rather lose a few games in January and February than in March. Hopefully they learn and improve from this. BEAR DOWN!

Talent obviously doesn't correlate to wins, but its exciting stuff nonetheless. I think simply put we only have 3 guys who can be worth playing 30min per game and 1 of those 3 doesn't shoot frequently enough to be a consistent offensive threat. Sorry to say that is Green currently. All 3 Nico, Green, Zeke have to be scoring more points than around 45 combined per game for Miller to shorten the rotation and stick with someone like Baker for closer to 30 minutes per game and suffer his 2-9 type stat lines with that volume.

If you cross reference this with 2003-2004 when we had Hassan, Salim, Channing, Iguodala, and Shakur -- Iggy was the 4th option on that team with 5 guys averaging 30min, 4th in scoring, but still had better stats than Green playing in a supplemental do-it-all role similar to Green. That team lost 10 games, was a 8 seed I believe and lost the first round to Seton Hall.
