Arizona Vs Oregon St 🏀 game discussion thread 1/12/20 8pm FS1

The #24 Arizona Wildcats will be eager to return to the court. They were three-point dogs in a tough 74-73 overtime road loss against #9 Oregon onThursday night. The Wildcats led for most of the game. Arizona is now 1-1 in conference play which included a home win against Arizona State. Overall they have not been quite as effective in the offensive end recently, and have lost three out of their last four games.

Zeke Nnaji should have a big impact on this game. The talented freshman forward has registered four straight double-doubles and is sporting an average of 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The Wildcats have another young star in Nico Mannion. The freshman guard has scored at least 19 points in two out of his last three games. Mannion is averaging 14.7 points and is considered a top prospect for this year's NBA draft. Josh Green scored 17 points in Thursday's defeat. The freshman guard is a solid all-around player and owns an average of 13.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG.

The Oregon State Beavers will attempt to return to the win column after losing two out of their last three games. They tipped-off PAC-12 play with a loss to Utah then went on to beat Colorado on the road. The Beavers were 5.5 point favorites in an 82-76 home loss to Arizona State on Thursday night. Oregon State's defense has been a bit of an issue early in conference action.

Watch for Tres Tinkle in this game. The senior forward scored 22 points in Thursday's loss and has eclipsed 20 points seven times this season. Tinkle features an average of 19.9 PPG and 6.9 RPG. Ethan Thompson is red-hot, scoring over 20 points in three out of his last four games. The junior guard is having an outstanding season, compiling an average of 16.7 PPG on 50% shooting. Kylor Kelly is also a scoring threat. The seven-foot center is averaging 11.1 points on a stellar 57% field goal efficiency.

The Beavers are currently placed 73rd in DI in Ken Pomeroy's college basketball ratings and are 6-1 on their home floor. Oregon State is very dangerous offensively and they are averaging 77.5 points, good for 58th in the country. They are allowing an average of 67.7 points, positioning them 150th overall.

Arizona is favored by -4.5

Arizona  needs to be focused an come out like did against Oregon  an leave that one behind hopefully  there is no hangover from that loss   defense  will be important  with tre tinkle an thompson  see how Arizona bounces back they need this one  in all realty  it was going to be hard to win both these two on the road winning one will still be good.

Arizona can't get swept on road trips if they want a shot at the conference title. It's hard to simulate OSU's 1-3-1 zone in 2 days of practice, so curious how we attack it. I'd have Mannion run right through the zone, which will put OSU on their heals. When you have talent and speed to break it, you have to use it and Mannion is at his best when attacking and finding holes in the defense. To often that speed and talent is wasted these days though. We will most likely walk it up passing around the zone and start our offense with limited time on the shot-clock.
OSU has it's best offensive team and I'm not sure we can defend anyone without fouling. We are just not talented enough on defense. It would make way too much sense to play some form of zone. The advantage of a zone defense is to help teams with poor man to man defense who foul to much.
I expect Mannion, Zeke and Green to continue to play well and lead the team, but the lack of support is the problem. Opponents really only need to game plan for 3 guys. Arizona will be hard pressed to overcome: a physically demanding and tough loss to Oregon; freshman who are not used to a 1-3-1 zone; and playing in a road environment against a motivated team that just lost to ASU.
