Power Forward/Small Forward
Ht 6-8 Wt 210 CLASS OF 18. He has Texas A&M, USC, Arizona, Florida State, UCLA and Gonzaga on his list of schools.
Taeshon Cherry is rated the nation's No. 62 prospect overall and the No. 19 power forward by 247Sports . However, Scout lists Cherry as the nation's No. 23 prospect , placing him within striking distance of adding a fifth star in his final high school season.
“I’m going to sign early,” Cherry said at Saturday’s EYBL event in Los Angeles. “I already know that.” Here's what he has to say about Arizona.
Arizona is a Great school. Cherry says "Coach (Sean) Miller and I have had a great relationship over the years. He’s a great guy. Coach (Lorenzo) Romar joining the staff is big for me because he recruited me at Washington. I have a great relationship with every coach on that staff".
Lorenzo Romar joined Sean Miller’s staff at Arizona after being released from Washington. A move that could pay dividends for the Wildcats in Cherry’s recruitment.
“I paid attention a lot to it because Coach Romar is like a dad and a coach at the same time,” Cherry said when asked about that situation. “So, I’m getting the best of both worlds at that school because Coach Miller’s going to be tough and Coach Romar will help me get through the tough times. He’s a great coach. I love Coach Romar.”
With the recent reclassification of Emmanuel Akot and the commitment of Shareef O’Neal, Arizona cleared up a slot for Cherry while securing a commitment from one of his good friends.
“They told me about Akot reclassifying and then Shareef going there is big for me too,” said Cherry. “He’s a good friend of mine. He’s a four and I’m a three, so he can set ball screens and we can play two man ball. So, their pitch to me has been with Emmanuel reclassifying it clears up the wing for me.”
On the court, Cherry seems very upbeat about the progress of his game.
“Just honing in on the stuff that I came in on,” Cherry stated. “I’m just focusing on taking everything seriously every time I step onto the court. That’s the main thing for me.”
“I think I’ve done great,” Cherry continued. “I’ve got to thank my mom and dad for that because they’ve kept me straight and level-headed. I’m not big headed at all. I’m hungry, so I feel like I have to do better at every aspect of my game.”
Cherry has yet to take any official visits, although he has unofficially visited UCLA and Texas A&M.
“In the fall, I’m going to take my visits,” Cherry stated. “I’m going to choose five schools to take visits to. We’re just going to narrow it down soon and pick the five schools that are best for me.”
As with O’Neal and Arizona, Cherry says he pays close attention to what friends have to say to him about their school of choice.
“I’m looking at it a lot,” Cherry explained. “It seems like everyone’s recruiting me. All my friends are recruiting me too. Every time I talk to somebody, they talk about their school. So, those friendships matter when I go to school.”
