My biggest takeaway from the game was the amount of communication amongst all the players on the floor. If you paid close attention you'd notice Justin Coleman and Brandon Williams were very vocal through out the game. Williams also wasn't shy about calling for the ball when he was open. Last year's team was missing that aspect of the game. Very excited about this especially since this was only a scrimmage. Can't wait to see more of this in the upcoming season.

Just finished watching my game on the DVR.
Here is my take, with a bit of twist on how I was looking at it.

IMPRESSED
Coleman - appears to be a PJC clone that is going to be able to setup our shooters. I just hope our shooters can knockdown shots..
Doutrive - very underrated defender. He plays the lane good, and could be one of our best off-ball defenders..
Jeter - rebounding machine, he is clearly going to be our best rebounder and it won't even be close..
Lee - stepped right into Pinder's role as a big that is going to be bring the energy and effort..
Luther - potential to be a lethal shooter, he hit one from about 28ft! Our spacing is going to help him get A LOT of open looks..

UNDECIDED
Akot - enjoyed his effort to get into the lane, but I need him to make a play; for himself or for a teammate..
Barcello - not so sure what to think of him because he didn't do enough, but didn't NOT do enough for me. He was just there..
Randolph - appeared to try a bit too hard. He knows he has the opportunity, but he needs to slow down a bit and let it come to him. He's not a shot-creator like Trier or Alkins was, he needs to get his with the movement of the ball and not to do it off the bounce
Williams - has the handle to get into the lane and score, but we need him to be able to create for his teammates also. If he can't do that, we are going to be in trouble as he is going to get heavy minutes this season

UNIMPRESSED
Smith - it didn't appear that he got any better. He took the same shots in the same spots as he did last season. His shorts got smaller, that's good at least.

One thing that really stood out to me was Smith, I sure hate to put any negativity towards anyone but he did not look good at all. There were some forced shots he took that looked bad. But other than that I really liked how Ira has come along, if he can just get through his off court issues then he could be a good role player for us. We need him now more that ever with Omar's status in question. DD was a nice surprise as he had some really nice sequences throughout the game on both sides of the floor, he will get his minutes. Williams will be fine, but that euro step reminded me of Trier and if he keeps that type of aggressiveness up then he could very well be our go to guy this year. Randolph is ready to take off, but just needs to let the game come to him. He has the tools but has to find his opening. Akot and Barcello will be contributors, and have feeling the Akot will take his game to the next level while AB needs to stay on his toes. Jeter will be our anchor in the middle and looks like he is ready to prove himself ready for the next level. But Luther has a NICE stroke, the 28 footer at the end of the game caught everyone off guard, but all of his other shots looked like he very comfortable shooting from long range. I am excited for this year and even though it is not a high expectation year, I think that flying under the radar will be key to this years success. Just look at the 97 'ship team, and it is great to have the season back on. Looking forward to next year as well. BTFD!

My ideal lineup would be:
PG)__Williams
SG)__Randolph
SF)__Akot
PF)__Luther
C)___Jeter

The lineup I expect:
PG)__Coleman
SG)__Williams
SF)__Akot
PF)__Luther
C)___Jeter

Lockdown lineup:
PG)___HevvyDevvy
SG1)__Akot
SG2)__Omar
PF)___Ira
C)____Jeter

Anyway, going back to my ideal lineup, I know that we probably won't see it very often. Coleman transferred here to be our #1 PG and I'm pretty sure Miller intends to stay the course with that.
Having a PG that has size, athleticism, and is also a serious scoring threat, though, is not easy to come by. In my eyes, B Will has ALL of that. I really hope we don't waste that opportunity by settling on playing and training him almost exclusively at SG the way we did with Trier.
I haven't seen enough of Coleman to really know what we are going to get, but I think he can be an upgrade from PJC, and I'm willing to give him ample opportunity to prove his worth. I'm rooting for him to silence all doubts.
At the very least, B Will should slide to the 1 when Coleman is getting a breather though. If we can keep B Will familiar and comfortable playing both spots, it'll be smooth sailing when we do want or need that look.

If anything I mentioned sounds like total garbage, let me know lol

Coleman should be able to run the show.  Miller named him a Captain for a reason; I'm optimistic that he'll facilitate the offense and hustle on defense.

Akot and Lee showed signs of improvement, but both are a little raw on offense.  If Ira stays out of foul trouble, our frontcourt depth won't be a huge issue.

Luther and Jeter need to stay healthy.  They had a few defensive plays that were eye-catching...but Jeter also let a lot of guys blow by-him.  Hoping he settles down and keeps opponents out of the paint with his huge frame.

B-Will is solid.  Hoping that he doesn't take the "Trier mentality" and shoot 20x/game.  If he can average 4 assists per game from the SG position...our ball-movement will be fluid.

Doutrive will be the energy guy.  I'm hoping that he gets to the basket to draw contact...but primarily serves his purpose as a freshman that hustles on D.  I love what I saw out of him yesterday.

Randolph has bulked up.  Hopefully, he can use his strength to guard multiple positions & earn minutes at the 3.

Barcello and Smith get a lot of grief.  Although they won't be huge contributors on the court this season, I love seeing Alex smile.  Looks like he's enjoying his time at Arizona & I'm hoping that he gets an opportunity to become a solid 4-year player.  Dylan hasn't improved much...but I think he brings experience to the team & will serve a purpose as a practice-guy that will develop our young guards/wings.

Counting down the days until the opener...

William's will get my blessing to shoot 20 times a game as long as he is making 60-70% of his shots. Other wise nope. Lol team work is just that.

Of course that would be ideal.  I just don't want to end up in a Bobby Hurley situation where guards are throwing up 3's with an eternal "green light".  The season would be a roller-coaster of inconsistency (similar to ASSU winning at Allen Fieldhouse but losing at Oregon State (in a game where they only put up 9 assists).

So... you do want Trier mentality. I'll never understand folks complaining about a guy who was top ten in scoring efficiency in the country taking too many shots, when he didn't lead the team in FGA/g.

I loved it when Trier got aggressive in the paint...but he settled for too many 3's early in the shot-clock as his career progressed.

Shooting 38% from 3-point range is pretty average for Sean Miller's players (and was below PJC/Ristic's %).

If Trier attacked the basket and drew contact as much as he took contested jumpers, I'd be ecstatic.  Holding the ball until 1 second is left in crucial games while trying to be a hero...not the best decision-making.

I love the dude for pouring his heart and soul into Arizona basketball for 3 years, but he led a lot of Arizona fans into heartbreak: https://thebiglead.com/2017/03/24/watch-arizona-launched-a-terrible-final-shot-against-xavier/

Watched out twice - so many players look alike, still confused about who is who!  ;D

I am really encouraged, over all by what I saw - think we can be very good, second or third in the PAC12.

I think way too much is made of how 'different' this team is. It isn't. We have two 5 stars - Williams and Jeter. We have several four stars and guys who will be major contributors (Luther, Coleman, Akot, Lee...) and we have some guys who need to develop more but are solid now (Barcello, Randolph, Doutirve)....

I think we are deep...not a lot of talent drop off from 4th-10th on this team.

Did not see a box score, but typical Miller team seems like they were not shooting all that well early in the season.

Steals, run and gun, playing faster, using our athleticism to our advantage - NOT EVER GOING TO HAPPEN. The Pack-line obviates all of that. Miller will not be moved from his mid 1980's, Mid Major defense. We'll be 1-1 in the tournament - pretty much like always.

Agreed. One small point is Randolph and Akot were 5 stars on some recruiting services. Akot was a top 20 player in his years class before reclassifying last year. Also, I expect Randolph to be a big time piece of this years team and probably one of the stars. I was in Tucson this past weekend for a wedding and was talking to a guy with legit connections on the team who said Randolph was the guy who made the largest leap in terms of body and skill. Combine that with the fact that Miller chose Randolph to go to the Pac-12 media day and I think Miller believes Randloph is gonna break out.
