Seriously, what did Arizona fans expect to see this season?
« on: February 10, 2019, 10:54:01 AM »
We all knew that this is a down/rebuilding year and everyone is questioning Miller and his coaching ability. I get that we as Arizona fans are spoiled, but come on. Oregon, USC and UCLA are not going to make the tournament and what excuses do they have.

Everyone has injuries and problems, but Arizona lost their whole recruiting class because of Book and the FBI. If we keep our #1 receiving class for next season then Arizona will be back to being ARIZONA good and everyone will be happy again.

Right now have a rag tag bunch thrown together and now our best player Brandon Williams is out. Not to mention Jeter got hurt right before. Akot who didn't live up to expectations leaves on top of all of this. The latest issue is Phelps being suspended.

This is a lot for any team to have to deal with. I would argue that Miller is doing about as good a job as you can under the circumstances. We all know that the CATS will be back on top next year will Nico and Green leading the way. Everyone will be happy again

I'm supporting this year's team till the end. You gotta take the good time with the bad. It's no fun losing, but things will get better. Rant over.

Yes we all knew this would be a rebuild. Yes I still support the Cats always and forever.

What did I expect? A little heart, some effort, and the ability to hit open jumpers and lay ups. Even with out the cast of usual suspects talent wise, there is no way in hell a lesser talent should come to our house and blow us out. OUR HOUSE, the house that LUTE built.

As far as the 'ifs and buts' of the Book and FBI thing goes, I ain't buying it. I can't see the future, let alone an alternate future based on speculation of what might of been. I'll stick to what I know, this team has given up, and that starts at the top.

Here's to better days..Bear Down.

I expected an Arizona team to finish between 2nd-5th, beat teams like WSU/OSU/Cal/Stanford, have a 50/50 shot with teams like Utah/CU/UW and struggle with teams pegged to compete for the title like ASU/Oregon/USC/UCLA.

The problems are stacking up with Jeter going down, then Akot transferring out, and now Williams our indefinitely.
Make no mistake, we are going to be BAD this season, but I’m still watching every game, win, lose or draw.

It doesn’t mean it still doesn’t hurt though.
Getting blasted by 20+ to USC and UCLA, then almost edge out ASU, to come back and get blasted by UW and WSU at home.
We are on a five-game losing streak!
I knew Miller gave up when he spent almost the entire 2nd half sitting on the bench.
He is ready for this season to be over, whether he admits it or not.

We are Arizona.

We are always a contender for the conference championship.

We do NOT miss the NCAA tournament. EVER.

We do not loose 5 in a row to ranked teams, let alone unranked teams, let alone 3 of them at home.

We do not loose to lower seeds and in the first round of the tournament 6 times in 9 years without at least 1 Final Four appearance.

I do not and did not expect those things this season only, I expect those things EVERY season, including this one. Every Arizona fan should.

I expect that we fire a coach who cannot achieve those things. Kansas would. Kentucky would. Duke would. Michigan State would. UCLA would (and did). Indiana I'm not really sure about anymore. Those are our peer group and we have apparently just totally given up on being a great, blue chip, iconic program. Some of us do not like that very much. Especially to see ASU and Oregon rising. Washington is cool... that would be great rivalry...but its not gonna be until we can get a new coach.

The FBI excuse is total B.S. - not one of those guys is even playing, except Quinerly and he's just barely playing and he's worse than most of our guys. We had the #3 class in the country and lost 3 in the Bahamas to nobodies with a very experienced group of several NBA players and the #3 class as freshmen. We still have three players from that class and not one of them are AZ starter good (Randolph, Barcelo & Lee). The guy who left was not even ASU good (Akot) and then there was Ayton, who Miller, apparently, had no plan of replacing. That team lost to BUFFALO in the first round (due to coaching, the pack-line D, and stubbornness). After the Xavier loss a year earlier and also with the #3 recruiting class as freshmen, everyone said it couldn't happen again with such great class coming in - which is what was said when we lost to a rebuilding, marginal Wichita State team...and exactly what you are saying now...this can't possibly happen again, we have the #1 class coming and everyone will be happy again. But I've seen this movie and I know how it ends....three years in a row.

NO. Not happy until we make the Final Four. Can you name the last freshmen class ever to drive their team all the way to Final Four? NO. You can't - because it has never happened. If Miller coaches that group, they might not even make the tournament. News flash: he's not a good coach when it matters most.  There's a reason he ducks ranked teams OOC, Altman is .500 against him and he has lost 3 games at McKale as a top ten team to lower ranked teams.

I'm trying to tone it down and not just be an ScumDevil asswipe about it - but WHAT THE F***?! What are people thinking?! How far do we have to fall and how bad to we have to be and how many more scandals about nonsense do we suffer before we do something to stop the bleeding?

If the FBI went away tomorrow and the NCAA said 'no foul' play on and we landed the next five #1 recruiting classes and we got the Duke treatment by the selection committee, ....Sean Miller would still NOT make the Final Four. He'd play the pack line and we'd get bounced by the first well coached team we played, every single year.

Personally I expected to see fight and heart in every game. I expect to see the coach change game plans to fit personnel, injuries, teams, etc. A press now and again. Some tempo to change our attack against a zone, aggressive defense to maybe get some fast break points. Something. We get the same style every game and that style involves big men that don't exist. If we lose let's go down with a sense that the team and staff tried every thing possible to win. Seems like a coach should have a toolbox with more than just a hammer inside.

This group of players deserves our support and I will continue to support them win/lose. It's the manner of the losses that's troubling and not what I expected.

YES - ANY group of AZ players deserves our support. They give up a lot to do what they do. But the coach is a paid professional and when things are not going well, he is the guy responsible. Things have not gone well now for several years and they are getting worse.

This is not a rebuilding year, in business this is called "damage control".  If your lucky things work out, if not things get worse for a while.  If you're a manager worth a spit, you'll analyze the situation, go into a holding pattern and hope that new deal next cycle will pan out.  If you're a spineless jellyfish you'll cut your losses and run or worse yet you'll fire everybody and bring in "new blood" and give yourself at least another 2 years before you get canned.  I know the counter points, they're not my points, I guess old age as made me more patient.  I don't even expect a big turn around next year, Arizona will be better but, over-dependence on freshmen is fools gold.  BTFD

Totally agree DWIZZ, no one thought we'd make the tourney this year but expectations rose when we started out better than people expected. Then we lost Akot, and Jeter and Williams got hurt, and Jeter still doesn't look like the same player he was before he was injured. Now we're down our two best players (and an assistant coach) and people are freaking out because we are losing. Keep supporting the team and next year we'll be back.

Losing Book sucked. Miller must find a way to lift up his team. This team more than any other needs to see that shot fall.

This This This.   Boys, its going to be rough seas for a while.  Keep grinding and moving forward.  Better days are ahead, but this is not going to correct itself in a season.

NOW it is damage control...but we all came into the season with expectations of a rebuilding year.  I'm with Reed...and expected to finish somewhere between 2nd-5th in the conference as a "bubble team".

We may be Arizona...but we've only won ONE National Championship.  The fans in Tucson have high expectations, but let's face it...we don't have the successful history of KU, UK, MSU, Dook, UNC, etc.

If Miller gets us into the Final Four and breaks through with a championship next year, his postseason history will be forgotten over a 3 week period.  If he exits the tourney early with a stacked roster in March 2020...the real grumblings will start to be heard & I seriously envision an Athletic Department that won't publicly "back" Miller.

Unfortunately, we already need to look ahead to "next year".  For now, we can hope that Hurley loses as many games as possible so ASSU can (once again) not make the field of 64.
