2019-20 Who Is Left Out?
« on: April 22, 2019, 06:11:15 PM »
Let's say next year's roster looks like this:

Max Hazzard
Alex Barcello
Brandon Williams
Nico Mannion
Devonaire Doutrive
Josh Green
Terry Armstrong
Stone Gettings
Ira Lee
Zeke Nnaji
Chase Jeter
Christian Koloko

Miller basically never plays more than 9 guys, usually a tight rotation of 8 guys with a 9th playing like 5 minutes per game.

Which FOUR of the above 12 is left out of the rotation, either completely, or only plays spot minutes?

Max Hazzard
Alex Barcello
Brandon Williams (Starter)
Nico Mannion (Starter)
Devonaire Doutrive
Josh Green (Starter)
Terry Armstrong
Stone Gettings
Ira Lee (Starter)
Zeke Nnaji
Chase Jeter (Starter)
Christian Koloko

If Hazzard proves he can defend, then I think he could displace Doutrive as the first guard off the bench--but I really expect DD to be much improved. The fourth man out was a tough call and I just suspect Nnaji's youth will ultimately slot him behind Gettings. However Nnaji would probably still get decent playing time during the first semester as Gettings is still sitting out. I'd love to be wrong since you'd think Nnaji has the higher ceiling.

Interesting concept!
Let me see how Iíd sort this out

All of the starters from last season would be in that top 8-9, so BW/CJ (2) are in.
IL (3) is the only impact returner, so he is in as well.
With the exception of Koloko, I expect the other four (7) to get meaningful minutes.

The remaining two spots will be fought between AB/MH/CK/SG/DD.
If Koloko doesnít redshirt, he is in the rotation (8) because Miller wonít have a kid sit and not play him.
That would leave that last spot going to one of the guards, and I would assume it goes to MH as Miller wouldnít bring a kid in to sit him.

Barcello
Doutrive
Koloko
Gettings

i have no idea who wins out but I think perimeter defense and turnovers will be early season motivators in determining it. Perimeter shooting should be 3rd in that determination but donít see guys getting yanked out for passing up a shot.

This year will be Miller's anomaly because he can justify giving 11 guys playing time.

Unless Barcello & Doutrive seriously struggle...Koloko will likely be the only guy left out of the regular rotation.

I hear that every single year though.  And we'll probably start by playing 10 players, but by the time we reach the pac-12 opponents we'll be down to 8 or 9 players getting regular minutes.  Injuries, inconsistencies and lack of confidence will eliminate a few players just like it does every year.

100%
Seems like every year we are all hyped and every single player deserves solid run, then by the end of the year itís an 8 man rotation

Worst part about that his skill set (rim protector) is what we will need most.
Again, Iím interested in seeing how this team is going to be solidified on both ends.
With seven incoming players, that is a lot to adjust/adapt to and expect to compete/win the PAC-12.

If Miller isnít going to give someone meaningful minutes, Iíd rather he try to redshirt them and sell them on the idea of having a much bigger role after getting bigger, stronger, skill development, etc.
Even if that comes from a guards AB/DD, or a big like CK/SG shoot the shot coach.

nice problem to have

hopefully this year we dodge the usual eligibility issues, injuries, scholastic stuff but its always next man up

having that sixth man that can make a difference might be nice, and wearing opponents down with depth pays off

Who was the last AZ BB player to red shirt? It just does not happen.

Kadeem Allen
Matt Korcheck
Angelo Chol was headed there but he dipped out when that idea was tossed around.

It does happen, most prospects just donít want to do it.
