Sumlin over the past six and 1/2 seasons has 49 wins against 34 losses.  that a 59% winning records, and of course he was not good enough to retain his job at Tx A&M with that percentages.  In the last 2 1/2 seasons he is 16 wins and 15 losses.  He has not raised his previous standards, he has lower them.  I will repeat what I have said since he was hired.  He is the wrong coach for Arizona and was a bad hire.  He acts like he is going through the motions but I really don't think he gives a damn.  He is getting paid big bucks and that along with his buyout from A&M he is pretty much set.

Agreed TJ - Sumlin played us for fools. I'm surprised there aren't performance clauses that could nullify or reduce buyouts

Just a thought here...I feel that the university missed out on solid replacement for RichRod...that being Sonny Dykes. And that is something that I haven't seen anyone here mention/discuss before.

IMO...Dykes probably should have been tried before RichRod. That's hard for me to say because I liked the RichRod hire. But Dykes deserved the shot. Always liked the man and felt he was capable of doing so much more if given the keys to the castle. He was never really given a chance. Similar to the way Michigan jacked RichRod over, Cal had him reigned in alot because they didn't want to buy into his style of ball and didn't believe he could deliver a product worthy of being called California Golden Bear football.

Look at how he has SMU going now. Yes...I know...AAC isn't anything close to being a power conference, but, to go 8-0 and sniffing the top 10 in the polls...come on now. There has to be a little more there than just a $hitty conference.

Instead we are stuck with Sumlin and his retreads. Only right thing done this season is bringing CC on albeit way way too fn late. I can only hope that this sparks some kind of improvement in overall performance. If not then I think I am gonna give up on being a Wildcat football fan/supporter and stay strictly a basketball fan/supporter.

Thoughts?

Dykes would have been a great replacement, but we may still be in the same position if we left the defensive staff intact.  I think Sonny is smart enough to bring in his own guys, but you never know.

Interesting idea....

On some level I want to say that a great coach would figure out how to win, even if he was constrained... IMO, that is what RR did (his staff and he not really recruiting like they should have, yet he over came that) that is what Tomey did (us against the world)... So while it stinks that schools don't always support their coaches, I bet some of that is on him, too. Also - Texans in California are not a cultural fit ever and I bet recruiting was really difficult for him, unlike at SMU.

How much you want to bet that Sonny Dykes will be the next HC at USC?

As Liquidated said Texans don't exactly fit in the California scheme of all things football. I think the Cal gig soured his taste for the west coast. I don't think he will be leaving SMU anytime soon. I think he finally feels comfortable and has full backing of the boosters. When it comes to SMU football, there is an energy around here that hasn't been felt in a long time. If he can replicate the success he has had this season over the next season or two, SMU will throw an obscene amount of cash his way to secure the future of the program. Anyway...sorry for the digression into the what ifs and If only we'ds...it was jsut a random thought and didn't mean to hijack.

Entirely possible but he is not really proven yet... seems like USC is going demand more...I heard a USC alum talk about Jim Harbaugh the other day...I guess anything is possible. USC also transcends California where as Cal is probably almost entirely dependent on CA athletes.
