The Arizona Wildcats first spring under Kevin Sumlin came to an end Saturday, and the defense again got the better of the offense.

The defense forced five turnovers in front of about 5,000 fans at the UA spring game at Arizona Stadium. Afterward, Sumlin said the linebackers had stood out more than any other position group throughout spring camp. But Sumlin saw signs of hope on the other side of the ball.
He praised the work of the running backs, whose ranks included some surprise standouts. And he really liked that the offense scored on its first possession of the second half after trailing at halftime 42-16. We didnt really get in a rhythm offensively too much early, Sumlin said in his first meeting with the Tucson media since the start of spring ball on March 19. Spring scrimmages can be misleading. With players sitting out because of injuries and most freshmen not yet on campus, they arent necessarily representative of whats to come in fall. But this much we know about the 2018 Wildcats: They have a supremely gifted quarterback in Tate; they have a promising stable of running backs; and their defense appears to be significantly improved. The offensive line needs work, receivers roles must be sorted out and depth needs to be built across the roster. But Sumlin stepped into a pretty good situation. Is the overall talent level on par with what he had at Texas A&M? No. But with a productive offseason, some contributions from the freshman class and good injury luck, Arizona should be able to compete in the Pac-12 South, which lacks a runaway favorite.

A couple of takeaways I had from watching the spring game. I think we have a legit back up QB in Khari Lane. He threw some nice passes & looked comfortable out there. It was an ugly spring game at the start & I think it went a bit long. Other than that the defense was flying around & looked really good. There was a much larger turnout for the spring game this year, so it looks like the fans will turn when the season starts.

The length of the game was more about the staff seeing what they had than anything else.
